Northport Website before redesign/The process
Northport Chambers previous website needed a more welcoming design that was simple and clean cut. After looking at their previous site design I was faced with a series of tasks:
The first was create a site map similar to what I did for my mobile app. I sketched this site map out in a sketchbook. Essentially my goal was to create more site organization. On their previous website they had single pages where content could be grouped into subpages and collapsible windows. What I did was move content across pages and create a dropdown menu so that when the user hovers over the main navigation it is easy to access the content they may be looking for.
My next task was to focus on design elements and presenting their content in a way that fit their requested color scheme and logo. For this I worked with the creative team to choose a color palette that was not overwhelming in color, we went with different shades of blue from their logo as well as a subtle gray. During this stage of the website design I was very focused at making certain elements that knew the user would be engaging with pop out. For example, things like the calendar, membership and sponsors buttons, board member cards, and event cards.
My Updates/Redesign Elements
My Updates/Redesign Elements
Complete redesign of home page and content on that specific page. The previous home page had content thrown all over and had very little context of what the user was looking at. I went through and made sure important content like event features and sign up/become a member were the first things people saw when they loaded the site.
Home page complete redesign
New redesigned directory layout
Created a new way on the site to present the paying directory members. When users clicked on the directory page before there was just a long ongoing list of members that had no organization. I went through and separated members by their area of work, this will allow people to click on a service they may need and get their contact information much quicker.
new calendar and presentation
Northport desperately needed a new way of displaying their events, as seen in their previous site they had an ongoing scrollable timeline. I created a calendar that matched the theme of the website and presented their events in a more effective manner. The calendar allows for users to see today’s schedule as well as view monthly events. When the user hovers over a certain day, more details will appear for events scheduled that specific day. The user can then click on those details to get further information on what the event is all about.
After the redesign of the site the chamber has seen a huge improvement in site activity and interactions. After looking at some of the data and analytics from the previous site to now, they have seen massive growth and are only continuing to grow further.
